While music belongs to time, painting belongs to space. My art is about space and divisions of space. Cezanne's famous observation that all of nature could be distilled into three basic shapes has driven my work. Artistically, I value thought over feelings and ideas over aesthetics in my work.
I begin with the basic principles of design found in the architecture of man and of plants and formalized into mathematical models by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. The actual process of studying and understanding these concepts frees the mind of conventional art imagery and sets the creative stage to pursue concepts of perfect proportion and pure form. Paradoxically, contemporary art expressed at this level, while precluding imitation, is directly related to the mathematical analysis of all natural form including our very DNA.
Artistically, this is how I develop new shapes and new ideas of eventual shapes. Exploration of subtle relationships often reveal unexpected forms. In final composition, whether I choose a monochromatic minimalistic approach or a complex multimedia construction, I have and always will stay close to Cezanne's famous observation. |
